Colour Narrative
fig 191

Fig 191 is a portrait of the famous Steve McCurry, the photographer who created images such as the one below. in picture like these, colours are used to emphasise the emotions or actions of the subject, particularly effective if the colours are clear and blocky. In this picture, the viewer will immediately notice her large red hat, faded white dress, dark limbs and the blueish building in the distance. This quickly gives the viewer and idea of the whereabouts of the girl, her destination, mood and implies that she is not very well off.

In this image I was trying to capture the story of all three adults in the picture. The two on the bench wear drab colours and seem almost magnetically polarised, signifying their boredom and disinterest in life and in each other. The man closer to the lens is wearing similarly drab colours, but the fact that his baby is in colourful, bright shades of red and blue could signify that the baby is literally lighting up his life.

It has to be said, the beautiful cobalt sky makes this picture very special, although there are a lot of interesting angles incorporated into the image itself.

This photograph was taken using the OM10 celluloid camera using black and white illford 400asa film.  This camera gave the image a grainy, vintage feel, reinforcing its verisimilitude.

Evaluation
What Went Well:
 I have learned:
  • how to use colour to create or emphasise a narrative in a picture
  • how to use black and white and colour (combined) for effect

    Improvements
    • I wish I had tried using a colour celluloid camera so that I could get a proper comparison between the photographs
